EU ambassadors to hold emergency meeting after Trump’s fresh tariffs

(MENAFN) European Union ambassadors from all 27 member states are scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Sunday after US President Donald Trump announced a new round of tariffs targeting eight European NATO countries that oppose what he described as a “complete and total purchase” of Greenland by the United States.

The urgent consultations come after the EU’s top leadership issued a strong show of unity with Denmark, cautioning that the US measures “would undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral.”

In coordinated messages shared online, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen firmly dismissed any challenge to Danish authority over Greenland. “Territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law,” they said, adding that “The EU stands in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland.”

Trump announced the tariffs on Saturday, targeting Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. Several of these countries recently deployed small military units to Greenland. European officials stressed that the Denmark-led military exercise had been planned in advance and “poses no threat to anyone.”

“We have consistently underlined our shared transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, including through NATO,” the EU leaders said.

The bloc’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, stated that “if Greenland’s security is at risk, we can address this inside NATO.” She warned that “China and Russia must be having a field day,” arguing that internal divisions among Western allies serve their interests. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte declined to comment on the escalating dispute.

In recent weeks, Trump has revived and intensified his push to annex or acquire Greenland, a goal he has pursued since his first term. He argues that control of the territory is essential for US national security and for countering Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic — claims that both Beijing and Moscow have rejected.
