Rob Jetten Sworn in as Youngest Dutch PM

(MENAFN) The Netherlands inaugurated a new minority government on Monday, with Rob Jetten, 38, becoming the youngest prime minister in the country’s history during a ceremony at Huis ten Bosch Palace overseen by King Willem-Alexander.

All ministers and state secretaries in the administration have now officially assumed office, according to government updates. The Cabinet includes 18 ministers and 10 state secretaries. Ministers who had served in the previous government were exempt from retaking the oath, while state secretaries were required to do so.

The coalition allocation assigns 10 ministerial posts to D66, nine to VVD, and eight to CDA, while one state secretary, responsible for handling the childcare benefits scandal, will serve as a non-partisan appointee. After the swearing-in, ministers posed for the traditional official photograph on the palace steps, a ritual from which state secretaries are excluded. Earlier, Jetten and the monarch signed royal decrees formalizing the transfer of power.

This marks the third new Dutch Cabinet in just over four years. A small protest occurred outside the palace, where about 20 Extinction Rebellion activists briefly blocked an access road, criticizing the incoming government for insufficient climate measures and continuation of previous migration policies.

Outgoing Prime Minister Dick Schoof, whose Cabinet collapsed last summer after coalition partners withdrew over policy disputes, expressed his support in a farewell message: “Their success is our success, as a country.”
